A double helping of Rodgers and Hammerstein

A double helping of Rodgers and Hammerstein

It's a safe bet that somewhere in the world, a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is playing at any given time. Two of their 1940s classics -- Carousel and South Pacific -- are on Tampa Bay area stages.

Today, Eight O'Clock Theatre marks its 20th anniversary with its season-opening Carousel, which features Rand Smith as Billy Bigelow and Heather Farley as Julie Jordan. The community theater production runs Thursday through Sunday the next three weekends at the Largo Cultural Center. Tickets: $6-$16. (727) 587-6793.

R&H's wartime musical South Pacific opens the Broadway subscription season Tuesday at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Running through Oct. 21, it features Lewis Cleale and Kisha Howard, pictured here, as Lt. Joe Cable and Liat. Tickets: $20.50-$62.50. (813) 229-7827 or toll-free 1-800-955-1045.

Defying gravity

"The trapeze allows the dancer to defy gravity, to take to the air with controlled weight and momentum," a press release says. "The dancer, seemingly weightless, challenges the limitations of what we know and opens a door to new possibilities in the world of dance.

Dryden, pictured here, and Moving Current perform at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Hillsborough Community College, Ybor campus theater, 14th Street and Palm Avenue, Tampa. Tickets: $6 and $12. (813) 237-0216.
