    Incontinence screenings are free for women

    LARGO -- The Women's Center at Largo Medical Center is offering free incontinence screenings for women who experience bladder or bowel control problems. Screenings are from 9 a.m. to noon today, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26.

    The screenings take about 20 minutes and are held in private with a female registered nurse. She will conduct a medical history and take the person's blood pressure, height and weight. There will also be a urine test.

    Appointments are required. Call the Largo Medical Center Healthcare Referral Service at 588-5702.

    All-day fun fest scheduled today for senior center

    PALM HARBOR -- Live entertainment, Seminole Bingo, a fashion show by the Weekenders and a tai chi demonstration are just a few of the activities scheduled for today's all-day fun fest at the Palm Harbor Senior Activity Center, 1500 16th St. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    There will also be free health screenings conducted for vision, hearing, oral cancer, blood glucose, lung disease, memory disorders and spinal alignment. There will be free coffee and pastries.

    The Palm Harbor Senior Activity Center will also serve a country breakfast, buffet style, from 8 to 11 a.m. on Sunday at the center. The cost is $3.50 for adults; $1.50 for children under 10. Tickets available at the door.

    On Oct. 20, the center will sponsor an Octoberfest, complete with German food and entertainment. Advance reservations are required. Cost: $5 per person. For information on the above events, call the center at 771-6000.

    Methodist church to hold rummage sale on Friday

    LARGO -- St. Paul's United Methodist Church, at Rosary Road and Highland Avenue, will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. For information, call 584-8165.

    Golf scramble benefits soccer association

    The third annual Osceola Youth Soccer Golf Scramble is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Bardmoor Golf Club, 8001 Cumberland Road, Largo.

    The tournament serves as a fundraiser for the 500-member Osceola Youth Soccer Association. The $60 entry fee includes various prizes and an awards dinner. Players may arrange their own foursomes. Call Jean Marie at 398-7750 for information.

    Workshop on adopting Chinese children set

    Great Wall China Adoption, a non-profit organization designed to assist potential parents in the adoption of orphaned Chinese children, will hold an informational workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lake Magdalene United Methodist Church, 2902 W Fletcher Ave., Tampa. Single people and couples between the ages of 30 and 60 are eligible to adopt. For information, call 376-7340.

    Registration open for children's program at Y

    LARGO -- Registration will take place through Saturday for the "Iddy Biddy" sports program at the YMCA of Bardmoor, 8787 Bryan Dairy Road, Largo. It is an innovative program for children ages 3 to 5. For information, call Greg at 394-9622.

    Foundation distributing free child I.D. kits

    LARGO -- Free child photo I.D. and fingerprint kits are available through the Missing Children Awareness Foundation Inc., 13094 95th St. N, Largo. Since 1984, the non-profit foundation has made the kits available to parents and guardians in the event a child is reported missing.

    Each kit contains a section for listing the child's physical description and any distinguishing marks, a dental chart to be filled in by a dentist, a personal information section, DNA instructions, room for a photograph and thumbprint and instructions. Kits are available in English and Spanish; specify when ordering. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Missing Children Awareness Foundation, 13094 95th St. N, Largo, FL 33773.

    In addition to distributing the child I.D. kits, the foundation sponsors a Christmas party for needy families. For information, call the foundation at 585-5360.

    Charitable horseback riding group seeks help

    CLEARWATER -- EQUITHER, a non-profit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding for handicapped youngsters, needs volunteers to walk with child riders. One or two walkers are needed for each child, depending upon the rider's level of independence.

    Volunteers must be able to make a weekly commitment. Other volunteers are needed for fundraising and other aspects of the program. EQUITHER is just south of Sunset Point Road between U.S. 19 and McMullen-Booth Road.

    Personal life history workshop begins Friday

    LARGO -- An eight-week workshop on "Personal Life History Writing" begins Friday and continues weekly through Dec. 8 at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N, Largo. Participants can attend from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. Pat Corell is the instructor.

    Storytelling concert has a haunting theme

    LARGO -- A storytelling concert and workshop entitled "Hoots, Howls and Haunting Fun" will be led by Karin LilliStarr and Sylvia StoreeBrooke Oct. 21 at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N, Largo.

    The session will be at 11 a.m. Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for students, ages 8-17. Not recommended for children younger than 8 years old.

    Jazz Holiday is looking for variety of volunteers

    CLEARWATER -- Like listening to jazz? Clearwater Jazz Holiday organizers are looking for people to help with the Oct. 19-22 event at Coachman Park.

    Volunteers are needed to work at beer, wine and merchandise booths, assist with security and help out in the volunteer tent. Floaters, who can assist in any area, also are needed.

    Various three-hour shifts are available each day and volunteers can sign up individually or as a group. Volunteers will receive a commemorative souvenir pin, a merchandise discount and free food and beverages.

    Hospice schedules classes for new volunteers

    Hospice of the Florida Suncoast offers volunteer orientation classes in October for people interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities with the organization.

    6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 23 at the hospice's main community service center, 300 East Bay Drive, Largo.

    9 a.m. to noon Oct. 26 at the hospice's north community service center, 2675 Tampa Road, Palm Harbor.

    Volunteer opportunities include patient/family support, thrift shop staffing, providing bereavement support, working with computers, office assistance, speakers bureau and support at special events and community outreach functions.

    Screenwriting and fiction writing class offered

    David S. Freeman is offering the Master Class in Characterization & Dialogue for Screen Writers 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Harborview Center, 300 Cleveland St., Clearwater.

    Freeman is a screenwriter who has taught throughout the United States, including Los Angeles, and has lectured at the American Film Institute and the National Film Board of Canada.
