Florida State receiver Peter Warrick and Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton entered this early season showdown for supremacy in the Atlantic Coast Conference as Heisman Trophy candidates.

They played like they were the most deserving of that most coveted individual prize.

All Warrick did was catch eight passes for 142 yards and one touchdown and run three times for 25 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown off a vintage Bobby Bowden trick play. Warrick lined up in the shotgun, took the snap and took off untouched up the middle.

"Pete had another outstanding game," quarterback Chris Weinke said. "It's amazing what he can do on a football field."

Hamilton completed 22 of 25 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a fifth score as his No. 10-ranked Yellow Jackets amassed 501 yards and traded haymakers with the top-ranked Seminoles.

"We feel we can make plays against anyone in the country; the only thing we didn't do is win the game," Hamilton said.

The game remained in doubt until FSU tailback Travis Minor, who had 122 yards, recovered an onside kick with 1:35 left.

"I don't want to play one more second of that game," Bowden said of what would be one of the closest calls in an undefeated, championship season. "I think Tech had a chance to win up to the very end."
