TAMPA -- Already one of the dominant teams in Sunshine State Conference play, the University of Tampa men's soccer team shoots for regional success today when it takes on Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.
The Spartans are ranked 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. Christian Brothers is No. 20. UT is ranked second in the region behind conference rival Lynn. Christian Brothers is tied for third with Barry.
After tying the Bucs 1-1 on Sept. 26, UT bounced back with a 1-0 victory against Florida Southern on Oct. 3. The difference was Roy Fink's conference-leading 12th goal, coming on an Aaron Pitchkolan assist. The Spartans will remain in Memphis on Sunday to play Central Arkansas before returning for their upcoming homecoming game Oct. 19 against Saint Leo.
VOLLEYBALL: Junior middle hitter Tiffany Boatwright became the first player to be named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week for a second time this season after outstanding performances last week against Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) and Eckerd.
Boatwright had a .523 attack percentage in the two matches with 4.83 kills and 1.17 blocks per game. UT (14-2 overall) is the lone undefeated team in the conference and faces New Haven (Conn.) on Saturday in Lakeland on the Florida Southern campus.
CROSS COUNTRY: The men's and women's squads each placed in the top 10 at the Disney Invitational on Oct. 6 in Kissimmee. The women, paced by Tracy Buxton and Dee Dee Haefling, finished sixth among 29 teams. Buxton and Haefling were the top two SSC runners, placing fourth and 10th, respectively, out of 144 runners.
On the men's side, Eric Hall was the top Spartan, placing 41st to help UT to a 10th-place finish.
After an outstanding month that included helping UT win its own invitational, Buxton has been named the SSC Female Athlete of the Month for September. She won two meets during the month and placed third at another. Also, the honor marks the first time a cross country runner has earned athlete of the month honors.
