TAMPA -- The Sickles girls swim team got a recent boost with two teammates returning to practice. Junior Lindsay Scoggins and sophomore Stephanie Johnston had missed time this season with serious ailments. Scoggins was sidelined with a chronic bone disease while Johnston suffered from ligament problems in both knees.

Although limited in their returns, both swimmers are participating and may see action during this swimming season.

Scoggins won't swim her regular breast stroke, instead participating in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. Johnston, meanwhile, will continue to swim the 200-yard freestyle.

Although neither swam last week, the Gryphons defeated Alonso 125-28 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Sickles will compete against Hillsborough at Memorial Pool Tuesday and against Wharton Oct. 23 at Temple Terrace Pool.

BOYS GOLF: Wharton continues to roll toward the postseason, as evidenced by an impressive trimatch win against rivals Berkeley Prep and Jesuit. Patrick Gibson led the Wildcats in the 152-154 (Berkeley) -166 (Jesuit) victory, shooting a nine-hole score of 36. Mike Giammaresi added a 37, David Tiffenburg shot 39 and Brian Wertz shot 40. The 31-2 Wildcats play at the Western Conference tournament Wednesday before the district tournament teeoff Oct. 22. In other action last week, Mike Alvarez shot a 35 to lead Gaither (12-3) to a 164-166 win against Bloomingdale. Alonso (7-8) dipped below .500, losing 169-176 to Hillsborough.

GIRLS GOLF: Heather Kemp's nine-hole score of 42 led Gaither, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboys (205) placed second in a trimatch with Plant (190) and Bloomingdale (211). The Cowboys remain at 14-3 on the season. The second-place finish at the trimatch followed a 193-204 loss for Gaither against Wharton. Alexis Esquia (42), Anne Vogler (48) and Christine Marquardt (48) led the Wildcats, who are now 8-2. Chamberlain, meanwhile, is 6-1 on the season after a 173-186 win against Plant. Mallory Code led the Chiefs with a 38 stroke total. Brooke Layton fired a 40 and Jennifer Stanley shot a nine-hole score of 46.

ALUMNI: Various former athletes from the North of Tampa coverage area are making splashes this fall at the college level. Among them are former Gaither stars Michealanne Cadiz (soccer), Lydell Ross (football) and Alli Tatangelo (cross country). Cadiz, a freshman forward at Jacksonville University, is leading the Dolphins in scoring with five goals. Ross, a freshman tailback at Ohio State, is the second leading rusher for the Buckeyes with 180 yards and three touchdowns. And Tatangelo is among the top runners at Florida Southern College, posting her best time of the season (a 15th place 21:17 time) at the University of Tampa Invitational last weekend.

Former Leto standout Mike Jenkins is enjoying success at Ohio State, leading the team in receptions with 12 for 264 yards. Former Wharton standout Dwight Ellick is playing well as a freshman defensive back at Notre Dame. Appearing in three games, Ellick has three tackles and is currently third on the depth charts. Volleyball players Molly Greenwood and Tally Payne both figure into future plans for UT and USF, respectively. Sickles graduate Greenwood, a freshman outside hitter with the Spartans, has yet to appear in any game action. Payne, a former Gaither standout and currently a sophomore with USF, has played in two matches this season.
