TREASURE ISLAND -- The Shoreline Reporter, a weekly beach newspaper founded six years ago, stopped publishing last month.
"I'm tired and just want to concentrate on other things," Wendy Stratis said Thursday. She says she will continue to produce publications for other publishers from her 108th Avenue office.
Stratis, 43 and a native South African, started her own newspaper after failing to find a news job when she moved here from Greece.
Drawing on her experience with the Lambrakis Organization, owner of five of Greece's largest newspapers, Stratis first printed the Shoreline News 6 1/2 years ago. In 1998, Stratis purchased the Island Reporter and merged the two publications to create the Shoreline Reporter.
The weekly covered gulf beach community news and provided an advertising alternative for local businesses. Stratis said 528 Shoreline Reporter racks still dot the beach cities.
"The phone rang day in and day out. People didn't want me to shut the paper down. It was just unbelievable," said Stratis, who lives on Isle of Capri. "I've made a lot of good friends and I thank them for their support.
"It's time to focus on other things in my life," said Stratis, who recently became engaged to Doug Duling.
