Highs and lows

DAUNTE CULPEPPER: Yeah, he whipped the Bucs on Monday night, but let's give it up for the Ocala native, a nice guy who rose from humble beginnings to set the NFL afire. The former Central Florida star has guided the Vikings to an improbable 5-0 start, stunned his critics and redefined the quarterback position with his size, speed and ability.

KEN DORSEY: The University of Miami quarterback threw for a career-high 328 yards and engineered a game-winning drive against top-ranked Florida State. Quarterback U appears to be back.

BOBBY LABONTE: He solidified his grip on the Winston Cup championship, demanding four new tires on the last pit stop and then driving to victory Sunday at Lowe's Motor Speedway. It was his fourth victory of the season and gave him a 252-point lead in the standings.

FLORIDA 2012: What's with all the Get Smart-like secrecy surrounding Tampa Bay's bid for the Olympic Games? Chief organizer Ed Turanchik fears competing cities would benefit from a sneak peak at his plans. Too bad he's left millions of taxpayers in the dark.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Ah, the drama of the playoffs ... zzzzzz. Is anyone else having trouble staying awake for these games? Only two of the 15 division series games clocked in under three hours, and the first game of the ALCS finished in a ridiculous 3:45 -- and that was a 2-0 pitcher's duel. NLCS Game 2 was 3:59. Post-season suspense is great, but getting to bed before midnight after an 8:15 first pitch would be nice too.

THE LIGHTNING: The team keeps touting these fast, young defensemen, but three goals in the last 2:55 of a loss to Vancouver? C'mon, fellas.

RESURRECTION OF WIDE RIGHT: FSU kicker Matt Munyon, you've just missed another field goal wide right to beat Miami, what are you going to do now? "I'm going to Gerry Thomas and Dan Mowery World!"
