Using the Iron Lady to sell successBy KRIS HUNDLEY © St. Petersburg Times, published October 16, 2000 Peter Lowe, who has made a fortune selling success to the masses, brings his motivational stadium show back to his adopted hometown of Tampa next year. And he's bringing Maggie Thatcher along as his headliner. Thatcher, Britain's prime minister from 1979 to 1990, is a semi-regular on Lowe's Success circuit, daylong motivational extravaganzas that regularly attract 10,000 to 12,000 people. Lowe stages 25 to 30 of the events a year. The next Tampa stop is Valentine's Day 2001 at a site yet to be named. While seats at the door are priced at more than $225, most tickets sell in advance for $49 to $69. Thatcher, whose conservative beliefs are as rigid as her hairdo, will lecture seminar-goers on "Challenges Facing the 21st Century." Taking second billing is another Lowe regular, Gen. Colin Powell. Though Lowe's spokesman declines to say how much Thatcher or Powell are being paid, the Iron Lady has commanded $60,000 to $70,000 per appearance in the past. And Powell reportedly has earned up to $20,000 more than Thatcher. Billy Barber, Lowe's media liaison, promises other big names will be added to the list of speakers in Tampa, which is weighed down with old standbys such as motivator Zig Ziglar, lawyer Bob Bluhm, Internet investor Phil Town and Lowe himself. Talks promise to be heavy on enthusiasm and light on content. But that doesn't seem to hurt Lowe. After 18 years in the motivational business, his company, which recently shed its non-profit status, raked in 1999 revenues of $27-million. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
