Bills QB Johnson separates shoulder

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Bills quarterback Rob Johnson is expected to miss two to four weeks after separating his shoulder during Buffalo's 27-24 overtime win over San Diego on Sunday.

Johnson was hurt on the first drive of overtime when Chargers defensive end Neil Smith knocked him down as the quarterback was throwing the ball away.

"He got my arm underneath me and that's usually when they pop out, if they drive you in with your arm tucked under," Johnson said.

Johnson was knocked out of a game with an injury for the third time in six starts.

Johnson, despite hearing boos from the sellout crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium, had been enjoying a career day. He completed 28 of 44 passes for 306 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The attempts, completions and yardage were career highs for the sixth-year quarterback.

GIANTS LOSE CB: Cornerback Jason Sehorn broke a rib below his right collarbone making an interception on the first play from scrimmage against the Cowboys.

It was not clear how long Sehorn would be sidelined, but Giants coach Jim Fassel said he could miss up to three weeks.

The Giants are off Sunday.

Sehorn, who had season-ending injuries the past two years, landed on the back of his right shoulder after jumping in front of Raghib Ismail to intercept Troy Aikman's pass.

He left the field for X-rays and returned late in the first quarter without his jersey and shoulder pads. He stood on the sideline as team orthopedic surgeon Russell Warren held up the X-rays to look at them.

Trainers wrapped his shoulder minutes later, and he remained on the bench.

Before the game, Giants defensive lineman Cornelius Griffin was deactivated because he felt woozy, team spokesman Pat Hanlon said. Griffin suffered a concussion against Atlanta on Oct. 8, but he passed medical tests and practiced last week.

Also, Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi was given a two-year contract extension through the 2003 season, the NEW YORK TIMES reported. Accorsi signed the extension months ago, making him one of the NFL's 10 highest-paid general managers who isn't also a coach, but neither he nor the team disclosed it, the TIMES reported. Hanlon wouldn't confirm the agreement.

STEELERS: Fullback Jon Witman apparently broke his right ankle against Cincinnati and could miss the rest of the season.

Tests on the ankle are scheduled for today, but the preliminary diagnosis was that it was broken.

Witman was hurt while blocking on a 5-yard run by Jerome Bettis early in the fourth quarter. One player from each team rolled across his leg as he was on the turf.

Witman is one of the key blockers in the NFL's second-ranked rushing offense. He often is the lead blocker for Bettis, who has 515 yards in his past five games.

Pittsburgh probably would switch Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala from Bettis' backup to fullback. Ma'afala normally is used more as a runner and pass catcher.
