Bulldog wins NCAA award

Georgia swimmer Kristy Kowal, a silver medalist at the Sydney Olympics, was honored Sunday as the NCAA's Woman of the Year.

Kowal was chosen from among 10 finalists for excellence in academics and athletics, community service and leadership.

Kowal finished second in the 200-meter breaststroke, which she won in the Olympic trials in Indianapolis in August. She has won eight individual NCAA championships and holds one world record and eight U.S. records.

Kowal led the Bulldogs to NCAA team championships in 1999 and 2000 and was chosen NCAA Co-Swimmer of the Year for 2000 by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

The other finalists were Carolin Bouchard, Boston College, basketball; Amanda Colby, Bates, volleyball; Jessica Dailey, Arkansas, indoor and outdoor track and cross country; Jayne Even, North Dakota State, basketball; Alia Fischer, Washington University, basketball; Emily Haley, St. Thomas, Minn., cross country and outdoor track; Anna Hallbergson, Barry, tennis; Gabrielle Rose, Stanford, swimming; and Phylesha Whaley, Oklahoma, basketball.

Couple shares Ironman glory

Canada's Peter Reid won his second Ironman Triathlon World Championship in three years Saturday, while his wife, Lori Bowden, finished second in the women's race in Hawaii.

Reid, 33, completed the 140.6-mile course in 8 hours, 21 minutes, 1 second, more than two minutes ahead of Timothy Deboom of Boulder, Colo.

About 1,500 competitors took part in the 22nd annual Ironman, a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycle and 26.2-mile run on the Big Island.

Natascha Badmann, 33, of Switzerland was the women's winner and 44th overall finisher, completing the course in 9:26:17.

Bowden, 33, the 1999 winner, finished in 9:29:05.

Reid and Bowden were looking to become the first husband and wife to sweep the gold medals in the world championship. Last year in Australia, they became the first husband-wife to win the same Ironman race. They won the Ironman Canada in August.

MORE TRIATHLON: The 22nd annual Ironman World Championship in Hawaii attracted competitors from the Tampa Bay area, including Laura Drake, an attorney from St. Petersburg living in Atlanta, who ran past rival Alison Hayden to finish 23rd in 10:37:03. Hayden finished 26th in 10:44:01. Drake was the top Pinellas County amateur in the St. Anthony's Triathlon.

Jeff Cuddeback, 40, of Apopka, won the masters competition with splits of swim 51:39, bike 4:51:04 and run 2:52:29 for 9:05:34. Joe Bonness, 45, of Naples, was third in his age group in 9:56:03. A member of the St. Pete Mad Dogs Triathlon Club, he plans to compete in the Great Floridian Triathlon in Clermont on Saturday.

Other competitors from the Tampa Bay area were: Kasey Carroll-Basso, 30, of Lutz, 10:57:06; Dean Cosgrove, 40, of Tarpon Springs, 13:47:39; Mimi Hutcheson, 46, of Lutz, ninth in her age group, 12:45:01; and Scott Matthews, 41, of Tampa, 16:28:25.

BOXING: Felix Trinidad vowed to knock out Fernando Vargas before the eighth round in their Dec. 2 fight in Las Vegas to unify the 154-pound title. Trinidad said he's looking ahead to middleweight champion William Joppy.

COLLEGES: Florida State's Jerrod Owen and Romain Jurd made it to the consolation doubles final of the Seminole Fall Classic tennis tournament before losing to UNC-Greensboro's Marcio Torres and Tony Mule 8-2. FSU's Chad Mooney and Joe Bassett lost in the semifinals. UNC-Greensboro had two singles and two doubles wins in the 11-school tournament in Tallahassee. ... Led by Norisha Campbell's 15 kills in a win over Clemson, the FSU volleyball team improved to 15-8, 3-5 ACC. Sophomore Dawn Hough had seven blocks. ... USF's Ildiko Zubor defeated teammate Ashlee Callahan in the final of the C flight at the Wake Forest Invitational, and Claudia Nieto won the D Flight. In doubles, Genevieve Houle and Natalie Schwartz finished fourth in the A flight. In the B flight, Callahan and Jamie Larson finished third. ... The South Florida women's soccer team lost 3-2 to visiting Tulane. USF's Mandy Schumacher scored in the 19th minute to tie it at 1 at halftime. Danielle Aldrich of Clearwater answered a Tulane goal, but Jacque Gruber put Tulane ahead in the 76th minute. ... Abby Wambach's goal at 19 seconds was the fastest in school history and helped Florida to a 5-1 soccer win over host Mississippi. Other goals came from Kara Rao, Jill Stevens, Megan McMillan and Angie Olson. ... The USF women's golf team won the Beacon Woods Invitational, eight shots ahead of Central Florida and 17 strokes ahead of Alabama-Birmingham. Miami finished fifth. USF's Kelly Lagedrost finished third for the second straight year, with rounds of 73, 74, 75. Fany Schaeffer shot 70 after 81 and 76 in the first two rounds. Jessica Hayes shot 76, 75 and 77, and Kelly Martin added 74 after 79 and 76. ... UF's Nathan Overholser and Olivier Levant won the doubles competition at the ITA All-American Championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga., beating Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly of Virginia. ... The Central Arkansas men's soccer team defeated Saint Leo 1-0. ... The South Florida men's soccer team lost to host Alabama-Birmingham 2-0. ... The Jacksonville women's volleyball team defeated visiting Morris Brown 15-2, 15-1, 15-7.

CYCLING: Romans Vainsteins was the surprise winner of the men's road race at the World Championships in Plouay, France, beating Zbigniew Spruch and Oscar Freire.

HIGH SCHOOL: D'Iberville, Miss., tailback Torey Staten set a single-game state rushing record, gaining 517 yards on 35 carries, with six runs going for touchdowns in Friday's 55-28 victory over East Central. He had another 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns called back because of penalties. "I was in a zone," the 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior said. "The line blocked really good. I just followed the blocking." Staten broke the record of 506 yards set Sept. 8 by Ruleville's Noah Ingram.

MARATHON: Kenya's Ndereva Nelson won the Beijing Marathon for the second time, and China's Wei Yanan set a course record in the women's race at 2:26:34.

OLYMPICS: Lenny Krayzelburg, who won gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and on the record-breaking 400 medley relay team, was honored as swimmer of the year for the second straight year. Misty Hyman's victory over Australia's Susie O'Neill in the 200 butterfly was voted performance of the year, and Richard Quick was voted coach of the year by USA Swimming.

BOWLING: Dave Wodka had a 16-game pinfall total of 3,797 to take an 87-pin lead after the second round of the PBA Tour's Brunswick Johnny Petraglia Open in North Brunswick, N.J. Chris Barnes was second to earn his tour-leading 12th match-play appearance. Rick Steelsmith was third at 3,683, followed by seven-time PBA champion Danny Wiseman at 3,678. The eight-man championship round is Tuesday, with the winner receiving $26,000.

SOCCER: Stadiums were empty across Greece, beginning a two-week suspension called by the Greek Soccer Federation in response to government reforms after Greece's 2-0 loss to Albania in a 2002 World Cup qualifier. ... Milan Macala, coach of Saudi Arabia's team, was fired a day after a 4-1 rout by Japan in the opening game of the Asian Cup.

TENNIS: Martina Hingis won a title for the first time at home, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 over Lindsay Davenport in the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich. ... Tim Henman won his first title in two years, beating Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the $800,000 CA Trophy tournament.
