Second teen dies after Thursday crash
TAMPA -- A 16-year-old Gaither High School student fought for his life for two and a half days before succumbing to injuries received in a Thursday night car accident.
Jacob Kruse died just before 9 a.m. Sunday. He had been in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital since the crash, which also killed fellow Gaither student Richard John Paul Maharaj, 16.
The two were riding in Richard's 1997 Isuzu Rodeo on Bearss Avenue when Richard lost control near Magdalene Avenue. Both teens were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car when it flipped.
TAMPA -- A fire spread through a public storage warehouse Sunday night, causing fire and smoke damage to five units and smoke and water damage to another 10 units.
The fire started just before 7 p.m. at the Public Storage facility at 5014 S Dale Mabry Highway near Gandy Boulevard, fire officials said.
Tampa Fire Rescue District Chief Joe Wooles said firefighters weren't sure how long the fire burned before someone saw smoke outside unit 89 and called 911. It took firefighters 45 minutes to douse the flames. Most of the contents of the five burned units was destroyed. The contents of the other 10 may be salvageable. Total damage was estimated at $40,000.
