The Beach Art Center is sponsoring Chalk Walk 2001, an event patterned after traditional Italian street painting that dates to the 16th century.

The Chalk Walk will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 on Bay Palm Boulevard. The event will include regional, local and student artists, but individuals and families with no art training are also welcome to participate.

Artists' pastels will be used to create the street art. To obtain an artist's application to participate, call the Beach Art Center at 596-4331. There is no charge to artists participating in the event.

The Beach Art Center is at 1515 Bay Palm Blvd., next to Indian Rocks Beach City Hall.

Gulfport

The city's Public Arts Advisory Committee is seeking proposals from artists for a permanent public art display at the Catherine A. Hickman Theater of Gulfport, 5501 27th Ave. S.

The theme is the "Spirit of Arts in Gulfport." The committee is seeking proposals for the placement of a design for the corner area located east of the main entrance to the theater.

Suggested media include ceramic and mosaic tiles appropriate for a seating area. Other materials are welcome. The media must be able to withstand the elements, including but not limited to rain and the heat of the summer sun.

The exterior area is not supervised or enclosed, so durability is essential.

The artist shall describe how the public art will be affixed or placed in this area and what enhancements or furnishings the artist may wish to have located in proximity to the artwork.

The budget for this public art display is $4,250. This budget shall provide for a completed piece of art, including all materials, labor and installation.

Each artist shall provide six sets of their proposal.

The submission shall consist of a one-page typewritten description of the proposed sculptures and a drawing or series of up to four drawings (no larger than 8 by 11 inches).

The written description must specify the proposed size and media.

All proposals are due no later than 4:30 p.m. Dec. 3. Proposals shall be mailed or dropped off in care of Paula Cohen, City of Gulfport, 2401 53rd St., Gulfport, FL., 33707.

For questions, call Cohen at 893-1067.

Treasure Island

The city is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Saturday, when the clock tower is dedicated.

Organizers hope thousands of people will bring scissors to cut a ribbon that stretches 920 feet from 106th Avenue through the new musical clock tower to 108th Avenue.

"Treasure Island Celebration 2001" is a two-day street party from Gulf Boulevard to First Street E for the new 50-foot-tall downtown icon.

The festival begins Saturday morning with a milelong Pirate Parade, featuring 35 floats, the Budweiser Clydesdale horses and local organizations. At 10 a.m., the parade will head from the Treasure Island Recreation Center to the clock tower on 107th Avenue.

Anyone present can get a free raffle ticket and be eligible to win one of six Celebration 2001 prizes. The top prize is a trip for two to London. Participants must be present to win. The drawing is at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The clock tower will chime for the first time around sunset Saturday.

Parking will be available at the Community Center, beach parking lots, City Hall and the Recreation Center. Parking is also available at Gulf Golf and the future home of Cadillac Jack's at 116th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard.

Free shuttle buses will run every 30 minutes Saturday through Treasure Island neighborhoods.

The celebration hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 21. Sunday.
