Trashy look frowned on in North Redington

NORTH REDINGTON BEACH -- Inspired by an unoccupied home on Dolphin Drive that fell into disrepair, commissioners passed a new ordinance Thursday that prohibits, among other blemishes, boarded-up windows and rotting roofs.

"The exterior roof beams were rotting and we were afraid the roof might fall in," said Mayor Harold Radcliffe. Out-of-state owners were contacted and repairs were made. Windows are still boarded up, however.

"This is the main example of what we want to avoid," said Radcliffe, adding that the owners have assured him the home will be brought up to the town's new standards.

The new ordinance requires that all buildings must be "weathertight, watertight and rodentproof." Peeling exterior paint is banned, as is debris on driveways, steps, sidewalks or paved areas. Garages, storage buildings, fences and walls must be structurally sound and kept in good repair.

All repairs must conform to the structure's original construction and meet current building codes.
