Scholarships offered in audio essay contest

Veterans of Foreign Wars posts 2473 and 1658 and their ladies auxiliaries are sponsoring the Voice of Democracy scholarship competition for Pinellas County high school students. Entrants are invited to submit a three-minute audio essay on the theme "Reaching out to America's future."

Local first-, second- and third-place winners will receive $300, $200 and $100, respectively, and their essays will be forwarded to district competition. District winners will compete at the state level and will be eligible for a $25,000 college scholarship at national competition.

School band competition planned for Saturday

High school bands from Pinellas County and throughout Florida will compete in the 29th annual Golden Invitational on Saturday at Largo High School's football stadium, 410 Missouri Ave., Largo.

Admission to the competition, which begins at 2 p.m., is $10 for adults and $5 for children, senior citizens and students.

Bands from Dixie Hollins, Gibbs, Lakewood, Northeast, Osceola, Pinellas Park and Seminole high schools are among those that will compete. For information, call 585-4653.

School Board meeting changes announced

A special Pinellas County School Board meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at the administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW, Largo. The meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled.
