    Blossom Lake Park to open with festivities

    SEMINOLE -- Residents can swing, play basketball or walk on a nature trail Saturday when Blossom Lake Park opens to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled at 10 a.m. at the entrance of the 11-acre park along the Pinellas Trail near 62nd Terrace N in the Blossom Lake neighborhood, east of 113th Street. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, children can participate in a fishing derby, a basketball skills challenge and a bicycle rodeo. A hot dog cookout will be noon to 1 p.m. Admission is free. Call 391-0204.

    Curtain set to rise on 'South Pacific'

    LARGO -- The Eight O'Clock Theatre will present the Broadway musical South Pacific starting this weekend at the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive, south of East Bay Drive and Seminole Boulevard. The show will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. It will also be at 8 p.m. Oct. 26-28 and Nov. 2-4. Sunday matinees on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 will be at 2 p.m. South Pacific is a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical set on an island during World War II. The theater has permission to produce the show from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatre Library. It will be directed by Lloyd K. Lewis. Reserved seating is $16 for adults, $6 for students. For groups of 10 or more, tickets are $12.50 each. To order tickets or for information, call the Largo Cultural Center box office at 587-6793.

    Public meetings set on plans for beach

    CLEARWATER -- City residents will have four opportunities to learn about and comment on a proposed redevelopment plan for Clearwater Beach. The plan includes ideas to improve traffic flow south of the roundabout, beautify streets, build more sidewalks, allow construction of at least two large new resorts and create better public transportation in the area. The meetings, which all start at 6:30 p.m., will be held Nov. 1 at the Harborview Center, Nov. 8 at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center, Nov. 15 at the Countryside Recreation Center and Dec. 14 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

    Quilt show scheduled at Long Center

    CLEARWATER -- More than 150 quilts will be on display at the Long Center, 1501 N Belcher Road, Clearwater, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The biennial quilt show, "A Harvest of Quilts VII" is sponsored by Quilter's Crossing, a local club organized in 1995. The show will also include a gift boutique, merchant mall and demonstrations.
