Financial security for women panel topic

The U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau, along with the Resource Center for Women of Pinellas/Pasco and the National Council of Negro Women, St. Petersburg Metropolitan Council, will present "Women and their Economic Security" from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the University of South Florida's St. Petersburg campus, Davis Hall, 140 Seventh Ave. S.

A panel of experts on women and finance will be moderated by Stacie Schaible, news anchor, WFLA-Ch. 8. Speakers include Helen Huntley, personal finance writer for the St. Petersburg Times; Cindy Hounsell, Women's Institute for Secure Retirement; Linda Lucas, economist at Eckerd College; and Rene Flowers, member of the St. Petersburg City Council. Discussion will center on practical courses of action that women can take to empower themselves financially. Local women will share stories of both success and struggle in providing for their retirements. For reservations, call Moira Nordman, 586-1110.

New restaurant opens on Madeira Beach

John Tooke and Keith Munderville have opened Rumors?, a steak and seafood restaurant at 13331 Gulf Blvd., Madeira Beach. The property had been vacant since the closing of El Paso Mexican Restaurant in 1997. Tooke will be in charge of the cooking. He gained his restaurant experience at Rick's Crab Trap in Fort Walton Beach. The partners purchased the 1,200-square-foot property in May. The restaurant is open 11 a.m.-2 a.m., seven nights a week.

Family's store offers gifts and holiday decorations

The Hartigan family, Debbie, Mike and Tiphenee, has opened K. Kringle's at 409 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach. The store specializes in holiday decorations and gifts. The family previously operated a house cleaning company. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
