For hot heads only

Chili heads love to brag about the intensity of their hot sauces.

"Fiery foods are the only segment of the food industry that threaten, insult and scare the consumer," says Dave DeWitt, the so-called Pope of Peppers and chief hot head for this weekend's fourth annual National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show in St. Petersburg. "Some of these hot sauces can repel cockroaches, and work well if you have a problem with woodpeckers."

For those without asbestos mouths and stomach linings, the fiery food festival will also feature tamer sauces, salad dressings, salsas and marinades. About 100 exhibitors are expected.

Exhibitors will come mostly from Texas, the Southeast and the Caribbean. Many will be from Florida, one of the nation's top hot sauce producers.

The event is from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Times Arena at Bayfront Center, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. Admission is $6 per person; children under 12 get in free when accompanied by an adult. For more information, log on to www.fiery-foods.com.

A haunting experience

For three years, Ron Folkman turned his garage into a haunted house to raise money for charity. His neighbors weren't too happy with the crowds, so he has now moved the extravaganza to a tent at East Lake High School in North Pinellas.

Characters and sets representing 13 themes from old and new horror movies will be spread through a series of six winding hallways in a 2,400-square-foot tent. More than 200 people are involved in the event, he said.

Folkman guarantees it will be a haunting experience. "If they're not crying, I'm not happy," he said.

Proceeds from the event will go to the East Lake High School band, of which Folkman's daughter, Danielle, is a member.

The haunted house will be Friday and Saturday and Oct. 26 and 27 from 7 p.m. to midnight. East Lake High School is at 1300 Silver Eagle Drive. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12. For more information, (813) 818-7800.
