Jay Mohr at the Improv

Jay Mohr may be best known for his stint on Saturday Night Live, where he did a dead-on Christopher Walken impersonation, and his role as an obnoxious sports agent in Jerry Maguire. But the actor/comedian has a wide range of entertainment jobs on his resume, including occasional commentary for Fox Sports, a role in the film Pay It Forward, a guest host of Live with Regis and Kelly and a guest voice on The Simpsons.

Mohr appears at the Improv in Tampa tonight through Sunday. Shows are at 8 and 10:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $24-$27 advance, $2 more at the door. The Improv is at 1600 E Eighth Ave. in Centro Ybor. For information, call (813) 864-4000.

Getting tour off on the Wright foot

Comedian Steven Wright, master of the monotone one-liner ("I have an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one.") begins his 14-city fall tour tonight in Clearwater. It will be the first time he has taken the stage since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and he admits it will feel a little awkward at first.

"I don't know what the audience is going to be like," Wright said recently from his home near Boston. "But if they came to the theater, that tells me they're ready to see a show and I'll do the best I can.

"I'm going to have to go through my act and make sure there's nothing inappropriate," he added. "Everything has changed now . . . everything is different."

Wright, 46, spent the summer writing new material for his act and hanging out with his friends. "And I have a collection of photos of people doing needlepoint that I like to look at."

Right. And he also spent the summer folding his map of the United States. That's because the map is actual size. One mile equals one mile. When people ask where he lives, he says, "E 17."

Steven Wright performs at 8 p.m. today at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, tickets $25.75-29.75. Call (727) 791-7400. He will be at Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota on Saturday at 8 p.m., $26-$30. (800) 826-9303.

It's J.J., in person

Dyn-o-mite! Okay, we said it. But then, what else can you say when you're talking about comedian Jimmie Walker, whose J.J. character on the sitcom Good Times made that word a catch phrase of the 1970s?

Walker appears tonight through Saturday at Wacky Weaver's Brandon Comedy Club, 779 W Lumsden Road, Brandon. Shows are at 8:30 tonight and 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $15 advance, $17 at the door. For more information, call (813) 661-5527.
