Catfish Festival reels in music, pageants, history
By JORGE SANCHEZ © St. Petersburg Times, published October 20, 2000 INVERNESS -- The second annual Catfish Festival on Saturday will offer several good reasons to enjoy downtown after a tour of the restored Old Courthouse. An official opening ceremony for the Old Courthouse begins at 9 a.m. After the hourlong event, the Catfish Festival will offer entertainment and food. Tours of the Old Courthouse also will be offered. The entertainment features many local high school bands performing on the steps of the 1912 courthouse. Here is the schedule: 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. -- Inverness Middle School Band. 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. -- Lecanto High Panthers Chorale. Noon to 12:30 p.m. -- Lecanto Middle School Band. 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. -- Crystal River High School Band. 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. -- Crystal River Middle School Band. 2:30 to 3 p.m. -- Citrus Springs Middle School Band. 3:30 to 4 p.m. -- Citrus High School Breez. Entertainment will be held at a second venue on 207 N Apopka, called the McLeod House. The building contains three businesses: Blondie's, Southern Charm and Mae's Mystique. The Little Miss Minnow and Miss Catfish pageants begin at 10:45 a.m. at McLeod House. The pageants are for girls 2 to 4 and 5 to 12. "The dress code for the contestants is like Huck Finn: jeans, a T-shirt and maybe a red bandana, like they were going fishing in a creek," said Sandra Dixon of Blondie's. Afterward, pony rides will be offered under the oaks in the rear of the building. Call 726-5115. An apple pie baking contest will be held at the McLeod House at 3 p.m. Other entertainment on the square includes a catfish eating contest in front of Stumpknocker's restaurant at 2 p.m. and a martial arts demonstration by the White Tiger Karate Studio at 3:30 p.m. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
