Homosassa sewer line finds funds
By JIM ROSS © St. Petersburg Times, published October 20, 2000 HOMOSASSA -- It looks like the Homosassa sewer project will receive another much-needed cash infusion. The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved $1.5-million for the project's second phase, which would extend a main sewer line along Yulee Drive into Old Homosassa. U.S. Rep. Karen Thurman, D-Dunnellon, said Senate and presidential approval were expected. Thurman said the funding was included in one of the many spending bills that the House is debating and voting on this week. "We had to stay on top of it," Thurman said of the measure, which she sponsored. She said that she and county leaders "have worked very hard in putting together sort of a comprehensive plan to take care of wastewater systems throughout the county." This money, if the Senate and president approve it, would help bring that plan closer to reality. Thurman said the county and state support for the program makes it easier for her to convince colleagues to vote her way. "What makes it easier is when you can go (to other lawmakers) and say it's part of an overall plan," she said. The Homosassa project is designed to reduce or eliminate use of septic tanks, which experts consider harmful to the environment. The project has three phases. The first has four parts, two of which are being completed now. Those parts provide a main sewer line along West Halls River Road to the Riverhaven subdivision. State and federal money -- including $1-million in federal cash that Thurman helped secure -- paid for the work. Construction is scheduled to begin in January on the other parts of Phase 1. Those parts will provide sewer service along portions of U.S. 19. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
