Key playersBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published October 20, 2000 LecantoPHIL REED: As teams focus more on the Panthers' running game, the role of Reed -- a sophomore quarterback -- should grow. He's thrown for 198 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions in his first year as a starter. Now that Reed has had some seasoning, don't be surprised if Lecanto goes to the air more often. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Reed has decent mobility. For the Panthers to end the season on a winning note, he will need to be at his best. CitrusDWAYNE LAUDERBAUGH: The 5-foot-11, 145-pound senior receiver isn't the biggest player around, but he's one of the most effective. Of the 43 passes quarterback Sam McLain has completed, 12 have gone to Lauderbaugh, who leads the county in receptions. He had four catches for 64 yards two weeks ago in a 19-7 district win against Springstead. His 36-yard third-quarter score gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the game. Crystal RiverCLAYTON TRENARY: The junior might have the best arm of any quarterback on the North Suncoast. But because the Pirates run 85 percent of the time, nobody gets to see it. Trenary has completed more than 50 percent of his passes for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns. He averages 9.2 yards per attempt and 16 yards a completion. As Crystal River gets deeper into the season, it will rely more on Trenary. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
