Track to host state competition
By JACKIE RIPLEY © St. Petersburg Times, published October 20, 2000 LUTZ -- About 600 bicycle riders from around Florida are expected to hit the clay and dirt of the Lake Park track starting tonight for a weekend of BMX racing. Practice for the two-day competition starts at 5:30 p.m. at Lake Park "We're expecting people from all over," said Louis "Hap" Hutto, Lake Park BMX track director. The Florida State Five Star Series, rounds III & IV, runs Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free to spectators. The next leg of the competition, rounds V & VI, will be held in Cape Coral, Hutto said. BMX racing attracts some adults and many teens and children, some as young as 4. Racers pedal down a steep starting ramp to gain speed for jumps, bumps and highly-banked turns along the 1,200-foot track. Lake Park's BMX track, developed informally in the mid 1970s, is now nationally recognized and was the site of the Florida state championships in 1996. Statewide there are 15 tracks and about 800 BMX members, grouped into three categories: rookie, novice and expert. Although most riders prefer BMX-style 20-inch bicycles, some also ride mountain bikes with larger wheels. Lake Park is west of N Dale Mabry Highway, about a half-mile south of Van Dyke Road. There is free parking, a concession stand and restrooms.
