Baker returns as Giants manager

SAN FRANCISCO -- Dusty Baker and the Giants decided to keep their good thing going.

After a tense negotiation, Baker and the team agreed Thursday on a two-year contract extension that makes Baker the second-highest-paid manager.

Terms weren't disclosed, but the Associated Press reported that Baker, entering his ninth year with San Francisco, will make more than $2-million a year. The Yankees' Joe Torre makes $3-million.

"We're all very happy about the outcome," Baker said. "We think the terms are good for both sides. We're very happy this could get done."

Baker led the Giants to baseball's best record, 97-65, and the National League West title this season. A two-time NL Manager of the Year in San Francisco, Baker is expected to win again.

Baker said he didn't agree to return to the Giants until Thursday, after receiving encouragement from his father and his mother-in-law, both of whom live near the city.

Baker, who went fishing near his boyhood home in Sacramento this week to evaluate the situation, asked for a private meeting with general manager Brian Sabean. The deal was completed 90 minutes before a hastily called news conference.

"After meeting with Dusty, it became apparent that we needed to get it done or move on," Sabean said. "We're very happy everything worked out."

CARDINALS: Right-hander Darryl Kile agreed to a three-year, $23-million contract. It includes a team option for 2004 and performance bonuses and escalators that could make it worth $32.55-million for four seasons.

DODGERS: Dave Hansen, who hit a record seven pinch-hit homers this season, signed a one-year contract with a club option for a second season.

PIRATES: The team is winding down its search for a manager, conducting one interview this week with one or two more likely. Broadcaster and former pitcher Bob Walk got his requested interview, and the team has asked the Dodgers permission to talk with bench coach Jim Tracy.
