Gore, Bush to split free hour Oct. 27 on Fox
Al Gore and George W. Bush have accepted an offer from the Fox television network to split an hour of free air time in which each will make a direct appeal to voters.
Under the deal, the two candidates will each get about 30 minutes of time beginning at 8 p.m. Oct. 27. Each will answer the question, "Why should Americans vote for you?"
WASHINGTON -- A divided House Government Reform Committee concluded Thursday that Attorney General Janet Reno retained control of a campaign fundraising investigation to protect President Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and the Democratic Party. The Republican-run committee, with Democrats in opposition, approved a report that said Reno "acted politically" in the investigation of Democratic fundraising in 1996.
Justice Department spokesman Myron Marlin called the findings "just another partisan report that raises the same old allegations."
GORE ALLEGATIONS: The Clinton administration is refusing to cooperate with a Senate study of a 1995 arms deal with Russia negotiated by Vice President Al Gore, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee said Thursday.
Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., said the committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on the understanding between Gore and then-Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin of Russia.
White House press secretary Jake Siewert denied the administration was involved in a "secret agreement" with the Russians.
Foe debates cutout after Lieberman cancels
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Republican Senate candidate Philip Giordano debated a cardboard cutout of "No Show Joe" Thursday after Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who is running for vice president and Senate, canceled his appearance.
