No. 6 Florida State vs. Virginia

WHEN/WHERE: 3:30 p.m.; Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee.

TV/RADIO: Ch. 28; WWBA-AM 1040, WZHR-AM 1400, WXOF-FM 96.3.

RECORDS: Virginia 4-2, 3-1 ACC; FSU 6-1, 4-0.

COACHES: Virginia -- George Welsh (132-82-3, 19th season; 187-128-4 overall). FSU -- Bobby Bowden (237-54-4, 25th season; 310-66-4 overall).

LINE: FSU by 311/2.

QB QUANDARY: While FSU senior quarterback Chris Weinke continues to nurse a sprained left foot, it seemingly hasn't hampered his throwing (1,032 yards in two games). Even with limited work in practice, he'll play. Said Bowden: "He hasn't sprained it anymore, but the soreness is still there, some of the swelling is there and some of the discomfort is there." Virginia's situation is more uncertain and potentially worse. Senior Dan Ellis, who has thrown for 3,738 yards (sixth in school history) and 28 touchdowns (fifth all-time), has been slowed by strained right hamstring. Even the week off didn't help as the Cavaliers had hoped and they may have to turn to Bryson Spinner or Matt Schaub, both redshirt freshmen. Spinner has thrown three passes with no completions and one interception, but is a running threat. Schaub, a dropback passer, is 2-for-2 for 14 yards.

SERIES HISTORY: FSU leads 7-1 and has won all four meetings at home, most in convincing fashion. But the Cavaliers own the first win -- and one of only two -- against FSU since it joined the ACC in 1992.

BOWDEN SAID IT: "My biggest concern is can we stop them. I can't believe the way they get started each week. ... I hope we can slow them down a little bit early." Virginia has taken a 21-0 first-half lead against BYU and a 21-0 first-quarter lead against Maryland.

Liberty at South Florida

WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m.; Raymond James Stadium, Tampa.

TV/RADIO: FSN; WQYK-AM 1010, WWJB-AM 1450, WAMR-1320, WDCF-AM 1350, WDCF-AM 1350.

RECORDS: Liberty 2-4, South Florida 3-3.

COACHES: LU -- Ken Karcher (first season). USF -- Jim Leavitt (23-16, fourth season).

LOOKING TO REBOUND: South Florida and Liberty are coming off big losses. The Bulls lost 41-7 at Southern Miss before taking a week off. The Flames are one week removed from a 42-14 loss to Hofstra. The Bulls have had extra time to think about what went wrong at Southern Miss and figure out ways to correct the errors. At the midpoint of the season, Leavitt said he's looking to get the team back to the level it was playing before the Southern Miss game.

HURTIN' BULLS: It might not have reached the level of last season when injuries decimated the lineup, but injuries again are playing a major role. Seniors Vassay Marc and Jay Mize will miss today's game and might be out for the season with herniated disc injuries. Wide receiver DeAndrew Rubin is questionable with a sore ankle and running back Derrick Rackard will miss today's game (ankle).

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING: With a running game that is averaging 64 yards and struggling with a weak offensive line, Liberty will need its defense to come up big against a Bulls offense that is averaging 325 yards. Liberty's defense has allowed an average of 359 yards, but Karcher said some of that is because of a lack of offensive production. He's hoping the Flames defense can keep things close against until its offense kicks into gear.

LEAVITT'S LAST WORD: "I'm interested in us playing good football again. We not only need to win a football game, we need to play well. We need to do the right things on defense, offense and special teams to get this thing going again."

No. 4 Miami at Temple

WHEN/WHERE: Noon; Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia.

RECORDS: UM 4-1, 2-0 Big East; TU 4-3, 1-2.

COACHES: UM -- Butch Davis (44-20, sixth season). TU -- Bobby Wallace (7-21, third season; 89-57-1 overall).

LINE: UM by 22.

ACHING ALONG THE D-LINE: The Hurricanes might be facing the leading rusher in the Big East without two of its top defensive linemen. Tackle Damione Lewis and end Quincy Hipps of Tampa missed considerable practice time because of lingering injuries. Lewis, despite having a strong game against Florida State, is slow recovering from a fractured right toe that kept him out of the lineup three weeks ago at Rutgers. Hipps hasn't been healthy all season, still feeling the effects of a high ankle sprain in preseason. If Lewis is out, sophomore Matt Walters fills in. Cornelius Green, a junior college transfer, would play instead of Hipps. Temple features the conference's leading rusher, Tarnardo Sharps, who has 792 yards and nine TDs.

DORSEY ON RECORD PACE: Ken Dorsey set a school record for passing attempts without an interception. The sophomore remains on pace to set an NCAA mark. Dorsey hasn't thrown an interception in 163 attempts, breaking the mark of 123 held by Gino Torretta in 1992. The NCAA record is held by former Bucs quarterback Trent Dilfer, who did not throw an interception in 271 attempts at Fresno State in 1993.

OWNING THE OWLS: Miami has beaten Temple nine consecutive seasons since the schools became Big East rivals in 1992. All the games over that stretch have been blowouts, with UM outscoring the Owls 365-81. Miami won 55-0 last season at the Orange Bowl.

Louisiana-Monroe at UCF

WHEN/WHERE: 4 p.m.; Citrus Bowl, Orlando.

RECORDS: ULM 1-6; UCF 4-3.

COACHES: ULM -- Bobby Keasler (84-46-2, 11th season). UCF -- Mike Kruczek (17-12, third season).

HOMECOMING: UCF needs a win today because it finishes the season against three Division I-A programs. UCF visits Alabama on Oct. 28, Louisiana Tech on Nov. 4, then the season finale is at the Citrus Bowl against No. 2 Virginia Tech on Nov. 11. The Golden Knights need at least two more victories to finish with a winning record.

POWDER PUFF?: ULM seems the perfect foe for UCF before that rough season-ending schedule. The Indians have lost four consecutive games, outscored 177-16 in that stretch. Then again, ULM has a tough schedule. Four of the season's six losses have come against Tennessee, Arkansas, Minnesota and Memphis.

FAMU at Norfolk State

WHEN/WHERE: Noon; Dick Price Stadium, Norfolk, Va.

RECORDS: NSU 2-4, 1-3 MEAC; FAMU 5-2, 4-1.

COACHES: NSU -- Maurice "Mo" Forte (4-13, second season). FAMU -- Billy Joe (59-22, seventh season).

ON THE REBOUND: After dropping consecutive games, including last week's 30-10 home loss to defending conference champion North Carolina A&T, today's game is just what the Rattlers need: A MEAC contest against a weak opponent. FAMU's slim playoff hopes cannot afford another loss. FAMU has fallen to No. 7 in the Sheridan Broadcasting Black College rankings, and No. 21 in the Sports Network Division I-AA poll.

STILL THE ONE: He has fumbled four times and thrown as many interceptions in those losses, but Quinn Gray still will be Joe's quarterback today. Gray has waited his entire career for the opportunity to guide the Gulf Coast offense, but after his second straight miserable outing last week, he was booed by the home crowd at Bragg Memorial Stadium and was benched in the fourth quarter.

STANDING ALONE: Wideout Jacquay Nunnally has 58 receptions; the team's three other starting receivers have a combined 67. Nunnally, who is 22 shy of passing Jerry Rice's Division I record 301, needs more help from his fellow wideouts. "We do have guys capable of making big plays," Nunnally told the Tallahassee Democrat, "and that's what we've got to get back to doing."
