Letters to the EditorsWhere pups play: Rationale behind dog park seems simple
© St. Petersburg Times, published October 22, 2000 Editor: Spring Hill does need a dog park, and I can't see why we haven't gotten one a long time ago. I don't own a dog, but a cat, but I do think it is about time we realize how many dog owners we have in this county and the ongoing problem dog owners have as to where to take their dogs. I have noticed that in every park I have been in, all of them have signs saying no dogs allowed. Of the many thousands of licensed dogs in this county, most of the owners are very responsible. Of course, there will always be a few who are not, but doesn't that work for people, too? I also see signs in parks that say no littering, but I have seen people throw their trash on the ground or out the window. So, you see, it is not the dogs. With a dog park, owners would be responsible for their dogs' actions, and the other dog owners, I would assume, would be right on top of a person who didn't follow the rules. As I understand it, this park would just be for dogs and their owners, so nobody would have to be afraid of the dogs because they would be in one area, fenced in, just for them. If you don't have a dog, you don't go to that park. Makes sense to me.
Civic association's work goes underappreciatedEditor: I recently attended a meeting of the Spring Hill Civic Association Inc., where awards were given to several retiring citizens, people who have given of their time and energy. It was sad to see how poorly attended this meeting was and the lack of interest from this community. The SHCA has worked long and hard to keep Spring Hill a nice place to live and yet keep its small-town flavor. We all seem to take this for granted, while in reality this group of people should be applauded for all the things they have done. Most of us have no idea of their many accomplishments. It reminds me of the joke about the man who comes home from work one day and finds the house in chaos. When he asks his wife what happened, she replied, "Remember when you asked me what I did all day? Well, today I didn't do it." Maybe that is what will happen here if the rest of us don't wake up and work as diligently as the SHCA has in trying to provide us with a safe and thriving town. All the people in this area, including the gated communities, enjoy what we have here. Why not attend a meeting and see how you can help?
