Children's lead levels can be tested for free FridayBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published October 22, 2000 TARPON SPRINGS -- Parents can get their children tested for lead from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Pinellas County Health Department office at 301 S Disston Ave. There is no charge. Nationally, almost 1-million preschool-age children have harmful levels of lead in their blood from peeling lead-based paint, contaminated dust or other sources. Dogs will benefit from dinner MondayTARPON SPRINGS -- Project Pet of Florida, a non-profit group, will host a spaghetti dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the George Washington Ahepa Hall, 20 W Tarpon Ave. The menu includes spaghetti, halkitika, which is spaghetti with sauteed onions, salad, bread and dessert. Halloween Fun and Safety Fair to be held SaturdayTARPON SPRINGS -- The employees of Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital and the staff and students of St. Petersburg Junior College-Tarpon Spring Center are combining their efforts again to offer the 14th Children's Halloween Fun and Safety Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the SPJC grounds at 600 Klosterman Road. The fair offers a tour of a haunted house for older children and games and prizes for the younger ones. Costume contests for different age groups will offer more prizes. A health and safety exhibit area will have vital-sign checks for children, first aid and water safety information, and police and fire safety demonstrations. The fully costumed and staged production, set in the 1920s, is sung in English. Blood drive is Saturday at all area KmartsAll Pinellas County Kmart stores are hosting a "Treat Someone to Life" blood drive Saturday, including the Kmarts at 41232 U.S. 19 N in Tarpon Springs and at 3140 Tampa Road in Oldsmar. Donors will receive a T-shirt, a checkup that includes a cholesterol test, a buy-one-get-one-free coupon from the Florida Aquarium and a free pass for two from the Muvico BayWalk 20 Theaters, opening next month in downtown St. Petersburg.
