We need to fight to keep symphony leader

© St. Petersburg Times, published October 22, 2000

Re: Conductor seeks post in New Mexico, Oct. 17.

No way, Jose, can the Florida Orchestra allow Thomas Wilkins to leave St. Petersburg for New Mexico. He's the best thing and largest draw, for adults and children alike, that our orchestra has enjoyed in its history.

Warm up the tortillas, lock the doors and keep our Mr. Wilkins in St. Petersburg.

Thanks for article on bicycling

Re: Bicyclists lobby for safer streets, Oct. 8.
-- Thank you for printing Andrew Meachem's article about the St. Petersburg Bicycle Task Force's meeting.
The article gets us one step closer to safer roads and lets motorists know that it's not "us against them."
I have found that many motorists assume that hard-core cyclists do as they do and make very few, very short bicycle trips. The article helped motorists understand that we put in a lot of miles each week on the roads.
A lot of non-bicyclists are living life at "100 miles an hour." Even when they're sleeping, they're sleeping at 100 miles an hour. They don't have time to think about what they are doing. Hence, they repeatedly do the same things on the roads. The article gave non-bicycling motorists an opportunity to stop and think.
We still have a ways to go. But I appreciate Andrew Meachem's taking the time to attend the meeting, to write an educational article and to be a part of the solution.
Kimberly Cooper, St. Petersburg

Speed monitoring device is needed

Why doesn't the city of Treasure Island buy or lease a machine that monitors speed on 115th Avenue on the Isle of Palms? The machine could photograph speeders, then send a ticket to the registered owner of the car.

Constant enforcement by a device is better than than sporadic human enforcers. Also, why does the traffic light leading from 115th to Gulf Boulevard always pass through the walk light even when no one is there?
-- Nancy Schubart, Treasure Island
