Cabbie killed in crash on Himes Avenue identified

TAMPA -- Police have identified the cab driver killed in a crash Friday night as 45-year-old Omeri Monroe.

Monroe of 4021 W Fig St. died at St. Joseph's Hospital after the accident, which occurred about 8:15 p.m.

Police said Monroe was driving a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria for Tampa Bay Cab Co. on Himes Avenue when he lost control, struck a fence and came to rest against Arbor Pond Apartments at Himes and W Beach Street.

Deputy cut on head during suspect's arrest

WIMAUMA -- A sheriff's deputy was slightly injured early Saturday during a scuffle with a burglar who was trying to break into a home in Wimauma, officials said.

Deputies were called to 3249 Saffold Road about 3:20 a.m. on a report of a prowler. When the deputies ordered the suspect to freeze, he took off running.

One of the deputies thought she saw the suspect with a weapon, officials said. A shot was fired at the suspect, but missed. After a short chase, the deputies wrestled him to the ground and took him into custody.

Deputy Donald Kersh got a cut on his head and was treated at the scene.

Rolando Garcia, 19, of 3121 Willow Road in Wimauma, was charged with burglary, auto theft, burglary of a vehicle, resisting an officer with violence and driving without a license. He was being held on $12,500 bail at the Orient Road Jail.
