Neighbors' fight ends in gunshot

NEW PORT RICHEY -- A lengthy confrontation between a New Port Richey man and two brothers ended with one of the brothers in the hospital with a bullet wound in his leg and the man in jail, New Port Richey police reported Sunday morning.

According to a report, Carlos Moncada, 27, 6423 Illinois Ave. No. 1, was arguing with Sean and Patrick Morales, who live in the same apartment complex in unit No. 8. During the arguement, Moncada took a broken beer bottle and slashed at Sean Morales, leaving him with a minor cut on his stomach, police said.

Moncada, the report said, then went back into his apartment and came out with a machete. The three men then fought over the machete, and Moncada pulled out a gun.

The report said the Morales brothers ran away, and Moncada began firing. One of the bullets fired hit Patrick Morales in the back of his calf.

Morales was taken to Northbay Hospital for treatment of his injury. The police report said he was being held for observation.

Witnesses at the apartment complex identified Moncada, who was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated assault. He was being held Sunday night on $30,000 bail at the Land O'Lakes jail.

Deputy accuses man of burying gun in flower bed

WESLEY CHAPEL -- A Pasco County sheriff's deputy watched curiously while a Seminole man, who had recently been released by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, dug around in a Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q flower bed.

Deputy David Hink walked up to Ross Kepple, 47, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at 5324 County Road 581 and asked him what he was doing.

"I was burying something," Kepple is reported to have said in a report.

What he was burying was a bag with a Colt derringer .22 caliber handgun, sealed in a plastic bag.

Apparently, while being interviewed by troopers about damage to a memorial sign for a slain trooper, Kepple worried he was about to be arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. He told deputies he kept it for protection. When the troopers left, he decided to bury it.

Kepple was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. When Hink searched Kepple for identification, he found a picture of Osama bin Laden and asked Kepple what it was.

"I love that guy," Kepple is reported to have said. "I want to be like him. He has power."

Kepple was released on $5,000 bail from the Land O'Lakes jail on Sunday.
