Since 1950, kids have been collecting money for the United Nations Children's Fund while trick-or-treating for candy on Halloween. Money raised provides vaccines, clean water, improved nutrition and other vital services that save the lives of children in other countries. This year, all the proceeds from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will go to Afghan children. You can participate by picking up a special orange collection box at Pier 1 stores or Sears Portrait Studios. For more information, log on to www.unicefusa.org/trickortreat.
Do a trick, get a treat
Eye-Gore is the perfect bubble gum dispenser for Halloween. Lift open the top of his head, dump in the gum balls (some are included in the box), push in his right eyeball, and the gum will pop out the other eye socket and into his hand. Eye-Gore sells for $4.99 at Toys "R" Us stores.
MOSI gets into the spirit
To get you in the Halloween mood before the big day, Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry, 4801 E Fowler Ave., is inviting you to Boo-Ha-Ha from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday. In addition to screaming and costume contests, the event will include a "horror-cane" wind tunnel, a "frightful" backwoods hike, a mad scientist theater show and creepy crafts. Boo-Ha-Ha is included in the MOSI admission price, which is $13.95 for kids 13 and up and $9.95 for kids 12 and under. For information, call (813) 987-6100.
Frightful fun in Largo
A Terrorific Trail through the woods, filled with monsters, loonies and things that go bump in the night, awaits you at Fright Fest 2001, 400 Central Park Drive, Largo, Friday through Oct. 31. The annual event, from 6 to 11 each night, includes contests for best costume, screaming and mummy wrapping. There's also safe trick-or-treating, storytelling, rides, games and a petting zoo. Tickets are $9.95 for kids 13 and older and $4.95 for kids up to 12. Call toll-free 1-800-779-4910 for information.
The zoo says 'boo'
You can't go to Zoo Boo at Tampa's Lowry Park to trick-or-treat, but you can walk through a haunted house. The house has more than a dozen rooms and features animatronics and special effects. Zoo Boo also offers a flying fox bat exhibit, haunted hearse rides, swamp strolls, a boneyard maze and games. Kids receive a small bag of candy when they leave. Zoo Boo is open from 7 to 10 p.m. through Oct. 30. Admission is $7 for kids 12 and up and $5 for kids 3 to 11. Call (813) 935-8552 for information.
