Citrus slicesBy JIM ROSS, BARBARA BEHRENDT and GREG HAMILTON © St. Petersburg Times, published October 23, 2000 Candidate appears as if on cue . . . or notPoor Dennis Baxley. He had the microphone last week during an Ocala campaign stop for Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney. Someone flashed Baxley a signal indicating Cheney was ready to take the stage. At least, that's what Baxley thought the sign meant. He inspired the crowd to start chanting "Help is on the way." But neither help, nor Cheney, was on the way. Baxley, who is vying for a seat in the state House of Representatives, took the gaffe in style. "Cues are wonderful," he deadpanned, "when they work." A QUESTION TO CONSIDER: During a political forum last week sponsored by the Sugarmill Woods Civic Association, moderator Norman Wagy introduced candidates and read questions that had been submitted by association members and spectators. "I don't mean to be flip, but we had trouble coming up with questions for the tax collector," Wagy admitted. He then noted that the group had toyed with asking the question, "Other than the high salary, what is the deal with the tax collector race?" PICTURE THIS: Internationally known artist Wyland began work on his 86th of 100 Whaling Walls at the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park Visitor Center on Friday. After speaking to the crowd, Wyland rounded the corner gazing at the blank wall where he was slated to paint his latest mural. "Nice wall," he muttered."I hope I don't screw it up." A DIFFERENT APPROACH: Sitting on the side of U.S. 19 late last week in a dark suit was a man holding a sign that read, "Will do financial planning for food." BUMPER STICKERS WE LIKE: "Warning! I am not a tourist. I am an armed native," and "Work is for people who don't know how to fish." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
