Afternoon fire guts assisted living home

SAFETY HARBOR -- A fire heavily damaged an assisted living facility and displaced its four elderly residents Sunday night.

There were no injuries reported, but one resident was taken to the hospital as a precaution because of possible smoke inhalation, said Safety Harbor district Chief Max Shimer.

Three elderly residents were at the concrete-block, single-story home at 2235 Glen Drive when the fire began. The fourth was away with family.

When firefighters arrived at the Harbor Heights ALF, there were heavy flames and smoke in the front and rear of the house. Damage estimates were not available Sunday night, but the blaze, reported at 5:23 p.m., gutted most of the building, Shimer said.

It took firefighters from Safety Harbor, Oldsmar and Clearwater about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Other homes in the residential neighborhood were not threatened, but one of the houses next-door may have had some heat damage, Shimer said.

The cause of the fire was not determined Sunday night, and the investigation was ongoing. The residents were taken to a nearby nursing home for the night.
