Just 3 pounds separated first from second place in Billy's Tierra Verde Fall Kingfish Tournament.
Matt Tevlin rallied to a win with his 33.5-pound king mackerel and took home a check for $2,500 Sunday.
Fishing off Blind Pass, his fish took a threadfin herring.
Tevlin said just a few other fish were caught in the area.
That wasn't the case for most of the other big king mackerel caught.
Kent Sahr's second-place fish, a 30.5-pound king mackerel, came from an area off Clearwater known for big kingfish.
The third-place king, 28.1 pounds, caught by Bob Glazier, also was taken at Clearwater's hard bottom.
Kim Carr, first place in the women's division, weighed in one at 19.6 pounds taken on a blue runner off Clearwater.
The youth division honor went to Ryan Deriso with a20.5-pound kingfish, also off Clearwater.
Most of the other winning anglers indicated that their fish came from the same area off Clearwater.
In another king mackerel tournament this weekend out of Indian Rocks Beach, there is likely to be a bit of jostling to get into position to try for a king mackerel on the Clearwater hard bottom.
There were 73 boats entered in the tournament, and the payout was to 14th place.
