    Learn about magnet programs

    These high school magnet programs will have discovery nights to introduce students and parents to their curriculums:

    Schools still need Teach-In volunteers

    Join the Great American Teach-In on Nov. 15. Visit the public school of your choice and share your talents and hobbies with the next generation. You can stop by for an hour or all day, depending on what's convenient for you. If you're interested, sign up today. Brochures and registration forms are available in all schools. The registration deadline is Nov. 8. For more information, call the Teach-In coordinator at any public school or information services at (727) 588-6297.

    Celebrate fall with local schools

    Skycrest Elementary PTA will be hosting a fall carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. All funds raised by the event will go toward a cover for outdoor physical education facilities. The fun-filled day will include games, prizes, face painting, great food and a haunted house. Skycrest Elementary is at 10 N Corona Ave., Clearwater. For information, call (727) 469-5987.

    Plumb Elementary School PTA will host two fall events. The public is invited to a spaghetti dinner, featuring pumpkin decorating and a haunted house at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The group also will host a carnival with games, clowns, a magician and pony rides from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Plumb Elementary is at 1920 Lakeview Road, Clearwater.     Youth essay contest by VFW

    VFW posts 2473 and 1658 and their ladies auxiliaries are sponsoring an essay contest for seventh and eighth graders. This years theme is "What does it mean to be patriotic?" The deadline for entries in Dec. 1. For a contest application and information, call (727) 738-4473cq.

    Get fit

    An aerobics/fitness class is offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Seminole High School. The class is for all levels and ages and includes floor aerobics, kick boxing, weight training and stretching. Participants pay per class without long term commitments.     Auction scheduled

    The Council for Exceptional Children Suncoast Chapter 176 will hold its "America's Children Auction" from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 2, at Temple B'nai Israel, 1685 Belcher Road S, Clearwater. Proceeds will fund scholarships and exceptional education activities. Auction items include art, fine crafts, antiques, sports memorabilia and more.     Big-Band benefit

    Clearwater Discovery is hosting a benefit concert featuring the 42nd Street Big Band, teeming with professional musicians who have played with Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and other big-band greats. Students and teachers of Clearwater Discovery also will be performing. The concert will take place 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2, at the Clearwater Discovery gym, 1220 Palmetto St., Clearwater.     Young musicians sought
