Many will be seeing red this week as schools throughout Pasco County celebrate the 14th anniversary of Red Ribbon Week.
This week honors Enrique Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent who in 1985 was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico while trying to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
The red ribbon has come to symbolize the commitment to create a drug-free America. Students of all ages will take part in a variety of activities to promote drug-free living -- from signing drug-free contracts to decorating classroom doors, wearing red on special days and sponsoring food drives.
Organizers say this is an opportune time for parents to visit their children's school to reinforce the importance of the red ribbon celebration and perhaps encourage some discussions in their own homes in support of a healthy and substance free lifestyle.
