Focus on volunteers

The St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading needs 200 volunteers to help maintain lecture and book signing sites, sell beverages and assist with the storybook character parade. The festival will be held Nov. 10-11 at Eckerd College, 4200 54th Ave. S, St. Petersburg. Shifts are three hours. Volunteers receive a T-shirt, parking, and food and beverage tickets. The Grand Central District, an association of businesses and residents along First Avenue S, Central Avenue and First Avenue N, from I-275 to 31st Street S, is in need of volunteers for its Grand Central Nite on Central Avenue. The street party will be held from 4-9 p.m. Nov. 3. For information, call Suzanne LaBerge at 323-2209.

The Suncoast Center for Community Mental Health Inc., 4024 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, needs volunteers for its senior support program. Responsibilities include providing transportation to medical appointments and shopping, and visiting the elderly. For information, call Luz Senan at 327-7656, ext. 270.

The Pinellas Animal Foundation will hold a volunteer orientation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 10825 Seminole Blvd., Building A, Unit 3, Seminole. The foundation programs include the Farm Team, promoting interaction between at-risk children and senior citizens with animals, and Edna's Pet Professor, an elementary school program teaching responsible pet ownership.
