Magic tops Heat 104-90; one win from perfect preseason

MIAMI -- Rookie Mike Miller sparked a third-quarter rally that propelled the Magic to a franchise-record seventh consecutive preseason win, 104-90 against Miami on Tuesday.

Miller and Tracy McGrady each scored 17 for Orlando. Tim Hardaway paced Miami with 13.

The Magic will try to complete an undefeated preseason Friday against the Celtics in Boston.

Miller had two three-pointers in a 13-1 run that gave Orlando a 78-62 lead with 2:37 left in the third quarter. He added another basket before the quarter ended with the Magic up 84-68.

The Magic maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way, leading by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter.

The game marked the conclusion of a 1-5 preseason for the Heat, who have to adjust to the loss of All-Star center Alonzo Mourning for at least one season because of a kidney disorder.

Sparked by 10 points from Duane Causwell and 11-for-14 shooting from the free-throw line, Miami opened a seven-point lead in the first quarter, which ended with the Heat leading 28-22.

Monty Williams scored 12 in the second quarter, six on three-pointers, and Orlando closed the half with a 19-5 run to take a 54-44 lead.

Hardaway had four three-pointers in the opening 7:03 of the second half as Miami climbed back into the game for a brief time.

PISTONS 107, ROCKETS 103: Chucky Atkins had 17 to lead five players in double figures for host Detroit, which played without injured guard Jerry Stackhouse, who has a sore knee.

Atkins also had four assists. John Wallace, Ben Wallace and Billy Owens added 12 points each and Cedric Ceballos had 11.

The Rockets went on a 12-4 run late in the fourth quarter to take a 103-102 lead. They couldn't hold the lead because Steve Francis committed two turnovers and three Pistons scored in the final two minutes.

Houston also had to rely on role players because Hakeem Olajuwon and Maurice Taylor did not play because of injuries and Shandon Anderson did not attend the game because of an illness in his family.

KNICKS 90, NETS 81: Larry Johnson scored 18 as visiting New York won for the fifth time in six games.

Allan Houston scored 15, Marcus Camby had 14 and 11 rebounds, and Chris Childs added 12 points for the Knicks.

HAWKS 81, CELTICS 72: Jim Jackson scored 19 and host Atlanta held Boston scoreless for the last four minutes.

Roshown McLeod and Hanno Mottola each scored 13 for the Hawks. Lorenzen Wright, starting at center in place of Dikembe Mutombo, led the Hawks with 11 rebounds. Mutombo is out with a mild case of malaria.

WOLVES 100, HORNETS 79: Terrell Brandon scored 20 and Kevin Garnett had 19 to lead Minnesota past Charlotte in Greensboro, N.C.

MAVS 104, NUGGETS 88: Greg Buckner scored 16 and Christian Laettner added 14 and seven rebounds as visiting Dallas won for the sixth time in seven games.

76ERS 94, JAZZ 89: Allen Iverson scored a game-high 24 and Eric Snow added 16 for visiting Philadelphia.

BULLS: Guard Toby Bailey, who played the past two seasons with Phoenix, was waived.

CLIPPERS: The team exercised its contract options on center Michael Olowokandi and forward Brian Skinner for the 2001-02 season. Both players were first-round picks in the 1998 draft and are entering their third seasons in Los Angeles. Both will become restricted free agents after the 2001-02 season.

SPURS: San Antonio waived forward Chris Carrawell, the 41st overall pick in this year's draft. In five preseason games with San Antonio, he averaged 5.6 points.
