Top-seeded Norman pulls out of event

BASEL, Switzerland -- Top-seeded Magnus Norman pulled out of the Swiss Indoors tournament on Tuesday because of a back injury.

The Swede, No. 4 in the ATP rankings, was coming off a victory last weekend in Shanghai, where he said his back first began to hurt.

Richard Krajicek, showing no lingering effects from his repeated injuries this season, used a bullet serve to beat fifth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round.

Krajicek, who has beaten Ferrero in all three of their matches, is seeking his first title this season.

In another upset, qualifier Davide Sanguinetti topped sixth-seeded Cedric Pioline 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Third-seeded Lleyton Hewitt was the only seeded player to advance after he won seven consecutive games to beat qualifier Cyril Saulnier 6-2, 6-2.

KREMLIN CUP: U.S. Open champion Marat Safin won before a home crowd in Moscow, defeating Rainer Schuttler 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the $2.05-million event.

"A first-round match is always the most important. It is always difficult to step into a tournament," said the top-seeded Safin, ranked No. 2 on the ATP Tour.

Lisa Raymond, usually a doubles specialist but the only American playing singles, downed qualifier Tatiana Poutchek 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to reach the second round.

SLOVAK INDOOR: Top-seeded Anne-Gaelle Sidot advanced to the second round in Bratislava, Slovakia, defeating Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-3, 6-4.

Second-seeded Anne Kremer had a little more trouble, downing Daniela Hantuchova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Fifth-seeded Sylvia Plischke topped Iva Majolim 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

HOME OFFICE MOVES: The Florida section of the USTA announced it will relocate its executive offices from Pompano Beach to Daytona Beach.
