What they're saying

Newspaper excerpts going into Game 3:

Baseball America spent much of Monday trying to interpret Roger Clemens' bizarre moment in Game 2 of the Subway Series.

Why bother?

It's easier for those of us here in Boston. We saw the routine for 12 seasons. We know it's a mistake to assign logic or reason to some of the things Roger does when he's working. It's like trying to find nutrition in fast food, or good taste in a prime-time sitcom.

It's Rocket Rage, pure and simple. Every Clemens start is Texas-Oklahoma for the smashmouth starter. Kill, Bubba, kill! ... You want me on that wall! You need me on that wall! ... Remember the Maine!

On the kind of Breakfast at Tiffany's afternoon you half-expected to see Holly Golightly window-shopping on Fifth Avenue, baseball's October caravan moved the tents and laptops 8 miles to Flushing Meadow. And for workout-day lunch in Shea Stadium, the controversy-gorged media dined on a buffet of hubris served on wood splinters. Like lasagna, it tasted even better a day old.

Oh, you thought we'd be hustling to find out how Game 1 hero Jose Vizcaino feels about leading off Tuesday night and playing second base? Or how Chuck Knoblauch, the Steve Blass of infielders, took Joe Torre's emphatic vote of no confidence in his highly paid veteran's exotic throws?

Nah, the tournament's first "travel" day was devoted to Bat Man and Throbbin'.
