OCT. 5, 1941, YANKEES 7, DODGERS 4: Brooklyn trails in the Series 2-1 but is a strike from squaring things with a 4-3 win when Hugh Casey pitches to Tommy Henrich. It's strike three swinging, but the ball gets past Dodgers catcher Mickey Owen, Henrich reaches first and things change quickly. Joe DiMaggio, Charlie Keller, Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon reach in succession, and New York wins. The Yankees win the Series the next day.
OCT. 3, 1947, DODGERS 3, YANKEES 2: Nine years before Don Larsen, there almost was Bill Bevens. But for Brooklyn's Cookie Lavagetto, Bevens would have had the first no-hitter in World Series history. In the ninth, and with the Dodgers ahead 2-1, Bevens walked two around two outs. One out to go. But Lavagetto rifled a ball past Henrich off the wall in rightfield at Ebbets Field, supplying Brooklyn with the winning runs.
