© St. Petersburg Times, Daughter accused of spending father's benefitsCLEARWATER -- A 27-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday on charges that she used her father's Social Security benefits for her own use while neglecting to pay his nursing home expenses. Brenda Batten Campbell, 27, of 1769 S Greenwood Ave. was charged with elderly exploitation and grand theft. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Authorities said Campbell diverted about $6,000 of her 58-year-old father's Social Security benefits for her own use. She is suspected of possibly using some of the money to bail her brother out of jail, according to officials with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the state Attorney General's Office. Campbell also is accused of falsely reporting to the Social Security Administration that she did not receive one of her father's checks. When a replacement check was issued, she cashed both $2,720 checks, authorities reported. Campbell's father remains in the nursing home where he was staying, and his payments have since been squared away, authorities said. Train comes off rails near Ulmerton RoadLARGO -- Three train cars carrying sand derailed near Ulmerton Road on Wednesday morning. One of the cars overturned and another was leaning, but remained upright. Only the front wheels of the third car came off the track, said Susan Keegan, a spokeswoman for CSX Transportation. No one was injured in the 10 a.m. derailment, which occurred on tracks near Ulmerton Road between Seminole Boulevard and Starkey Road. There were no hazardous materials spilled and the derailment was not near an intersection with a road, so traffic was not affected, Keegan said. The train was taking sand from Clearwater to a location Keegan would only identify as a business in Pinellas County. It was the only train to use that track, Keegan said. The cars derailed were in a line of 33 cars that were being pulled by one locomotive, Keegan said. She said the cause of the derailment is under investigation and has not been determined. Keegan said workers planned to have the cars uprighted by noon today. They also plan to have the track fixed by this evening. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
