Just in time for cooler weather and holiday shopping, Florida Craftsmen presents the fifth annual CraftArt Outdoor Festival. The show features 125 contemporary craft artists from across the nation displaying work, including wood, metal, clay, fabric, beadwork, jewelry and mixed media pieces.

It's not a huge show, and that's why some artists like it.

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," says Gulfport jeweler Ann Allen. "It's very different from working in an isolated studio. With CraftArt's more intimate setting I get to know those who are buying my works, and I can see them wear my creations. It's a real privilege for me."

The $3 CraftArt weekend admission fee includes a discount on admission to the Tampa Museum of Art's current exhibit, "Craft is a Verb: Selections from the Collection of the American Craft Museum," an overview of the arts from the 1950s on.

Returning CraftArt participants include the 2000 Award of Excellence winners Eva Walsh, known for her intricate beadwork; ceramic artist Peter Streit; jeweler Jan Wunsch; and woodworkers Dale Lewis and Sara Eoff. Two artists from Havana, Cuba -- ceramist Grisel Rivera Hernandez and woodworker Fernando Ortega Martinez -- will be first-time CraftArt exhibitors.

Jeanie Holland’s terra cotta night light will be among works at the CraftArt Outdoor Festival.
Andrew H. Glasgow of Asheville, N.C., will judge this year's show. He is executive director of the Furniture Society and was curator of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, one of the largest craft guilds in the country. Artists are competing for more than $18,000 in prizes.

Fiber artists from across Florida have contributed panels for a wall hanging to be raffled. The quilt, Florida Green, was designed and completed by Miami artists Janet McIntyre and Erman. Tickets are $5 each, or 3 for $10, and the final drawing will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds will go toward the Florida Craftsmen's campaign to purchase the building that houses its St. Petersburg gallery.
