Grisly "Ghosts"
Those marketing scamps at Warner Bros. found a new way to trick moviegoers while promoting Thirteen Ghosts, a remake of William Castle's 1960 schlocker. The old version came with special glasses enabling moviegoers to "see" ghosts on-screen. The new version comes with a promotional technique anyone can see through. Television ads conclude with bold lettering and an announcer's voice: "This film has been rated R for horror violence, gore, nudity and some language. You have been warned." Warner makes it seem like a public service announcement when it's actually selling out to viewers who enjoy horror violence, gore and gratuitous nudity or profanity. For the record, the movie concerns family members inheriting a haunted house and the ghosts within. Slumming actors F. Murray Abraham, Matthew Lillard, Embeth Davidtz and Tony Shalhoub are second bananas to a wealth of grisly special effects. Now you've been warned.
