Bluegrass flourishes

Kathy Mattea's country music is filled with bluegrass flourishes and a bit of a Celtic kick. With her classically trained voice -- she studied opera -- Mattea nabbed some Grammys and Female Vocalist of the Year from the Country Music Association.

Innocent Years, Mattea's latest, finds the singer reflecting at 40. It's a thoughtful collection exploring spirituality, love and the difficulties of struggling with the failing health of Mattea's mother and father. Innocent Years is indicative of Mattea's commitment, despite the trends of Nashville, to good music and honest story telling.

Kathy Mattea performs with Asleep at the Wheel, 8 p.m. Saturday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. Tickets are $26.75-$32.75. (727) 791-7400. She and Asleep at the Wheel perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets are $27-$34. (941) 953-3368.
