American art from the Smithsonian

Lavern Kelley's Classroom with Three Figures, in the Tampa Museum of Art's "Contemporary Folk Art" exhibit, depicts a familiar scene. A teacher is reprimanding two students, as you can tell by her stern countenance and their rigid postures. Perhaps she has taken personally the blackboard art of an unflattering animal. Kelley is a self-taught artist who makes art of available materials, in this case painted white pine, plywood, brass and plastic. The show is one of eight from the Smithsonian American Art Museum currently traveling to 70 venues throughout the United States during the museum's three-year restoration. The Tampa Museum of Art is at 600 N Ashley Drive, Tampa; (813) 274-8130. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, through Nov. 26. Admission: adults $5; discounts for others; by donation only 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
