School series brings classical music
By TIM GRANT
© St. Petersburg Times, CARROLLWOOD -- Along with movies, restaurants, bars and theaters, people in northwest Hillsborough can add a new item to their entertainment options: classical music. Independent Day School on Nov. 4 will kick off a series of performances by top musicians from around the state. They're calling the concert series "Reflections," largely because the performances will be held in the school's new theater and training center on the edge of scenic Lake Lipsey. "I wanted to have a place in Carrollwood where people could hear professional quality chamber music," said IDS music teacher Tom McColley, who proposed the idea. "We want to make the school an artistic focal point for people out here." The theater at 12015 Orange Grove Drive will seat about 300 people. Tickets for the performances will be $5 per person. Families are encouraged to bring children of all ages. McColley said the programs will be slightly shorter than traditional concerts and will include discussions with the performers. The first concert, "Reflections Brass," will feature symphonic brass musicians playing a variety of music from different centuries, including songs from the Renaissance and one that McColley wrote. The second concert on Feb. 10, will highlight "Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale," complete with narration. The third concert on April 7, "Mostly Mozart," will include Mozart's flute quartet, as well as one of the most famous string quartets ever written, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. All programs start at 3 p.m. with a one-hour intermission. "The whole premise of the concerts is for the whole family to enjoy them," McColley said. "We want kids to enjoy this and gain a lifelong appreciation for classical music." - To reach Tim Grant call 226-3471, or e-mail him at grant@sptimes.com. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
