History, frivolity on tap for the weekend
By Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published October 27, 2000 TARPON SPRINGS -- History will come to life Saturday during a tour of Cycadia Cemetery, where actors will play the roles of notable figures who lived in Tarpon Springs. The re-enactments include former town marshal Rube Jones, who was murdered in 1921, and Dr. Andrew Albaugh, a pioneer physician in Tarpon Springs who drove a horse and buggy to make house calls. Other figures discussed on the tour will be Mahalia Jones, who was born a slave and worked as a midwife; Nathaniel Patton, who established a sawmill on the Anclote River and built a house about 1884 that still stands; and Mary Marie Zurdos, who, in 1906, became the first Greek person buried in Cycadia Cemetery. The free tours will start at staggered times between 10 a.m. and noon. The cemetery is on Keystone Road, one block east of U.S. 19.
