BYU gets bounces; coach hits milestone

PROVO, Utah -- Owen Pochman kicked two field goals, getting a great bounce on the first, to give BYU coach LaVell Edwards his 255th victory as the Cougars beat Wyoming 19-7 on Thursday night.

Edwards improved to 255-100-3, tying former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne for sixth place on the NCAA's career list. Edwards is retiring after 29 seasons this year; Osborne retired three years ago after 25 seasons.

The Cougars went ahead 9-7 late in the third quarter when Pochman's wobbling line-drive attempt from 48 yards struck the crossbar and bounced through the posts.

Pochman, who missed three second-half field goals during BYU's 16-15 loss to San Diego State last weekend, celebrated on the field while the normally stoic Edwards cracked a smile on the BYU sideline.

Pochman added a 42-yard field goal, this time with plenty of height, with 4:15 to play.

E. KENTUCKY 28, TENNESSEE ST. 0: Maurice Clark ran for 85 yards and a touchdown for the host Colonels. The victory was No. 298 for Eastern Kentucky coach Roy Kidd.

ALABAMA: Cornerback Gerald Dixon probably will miss the rest of the season because of an aggravated wrist injury.

DUKE: University lawyers asked a judge to set aside a jury award of $2-million to a woman who complained of discrimination after being cut from the team.

GROVE CITY: The magic number for R.J. Bowers is 88. Bowers, the senior fullback from Grove City, Pa., needs 88 yards Saturday at Bethany (W.Va.) College to break the NCAA all-division career rushing record. Bowers has rushed for 6,871 yards and 84 touchdowns on 1,090 carries.

PITTSBURG STATE: Quarterback Lateef Walker was critically injured in a traffic accident. Walker, 22, was a passenger in a car that left a Pittsburg, Kan., street at high speed, went into a ditch and struck a light pole before landing upside down, police reported.

TENNESSEE: The Volunteers are going on the road again. And that puts another set of goal posts in danger. Tennessee hasn't won away from Neyland Stadium this season, while No. 17 South Carolina has recorded the best one-year turnaround in SEC history after going 0-11 last year. Two of the Vols' losses -- to Georgia and LSU -- ended long series winning streaks by Tennessee. Like the seven straight victories Tennessee has over the Gamecocks.

SOUTHERN CAL: Starting free safety Ife Ohalete will miss the remainder of the season after tests revealed a stress fracture on the top of his right foot.

TEXAS: Tight end Mike Jones will miss the rest of the season because of a right knee injury.

TULANE: Former running back Toney Converse has been put on two years of probation for obstructing justice during a drug investigation. Converse entered a guilty plea Wednesday in Gretna, La., under the Alford rule, which means the plea can be removed later from his record. A defendant entering an Alford plea does not actually admit guilt.

CITRUS BOWL: Ticket prices for the 55th annual game, which are $50, increase to $60 Wednesday. Tickets can be bought online on the Florida Citrus Sports Web site at www.fcsports.com or at any Florida Ticketmaster outlet, (407) 839-3900.

UNITAS AWARD: Quarterbacks for four of the country's Top 16 teams are among the finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The five finalists are Josh Heupel of No. 3 Oklahoma, Chris Weinke of No. 6 Florida State, Marques Tuiasosopo of No. 9 Washington, Drew Brees of No. 16 Purdue and Bart Hendricks of Boise State.
