Area notables pitch in at celebrity car wash

Today is the annual Make A Difference Day and a number of activities have been scheduled by groups hoping to enhance the quality of life in Citrus County:

CELEBRITY CAR WASH The Rotary Club of Inverness is sponsoring the sixth annual Celebrity Car Wash in honor of Make a Difference Day.

The car wash is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., today at Citrus High School Main Street parking lot. Cost: $3 donation for cars; $5 for vans or trucks. All proceeds are donated to the Rotary Video Library at Citrus Memorial Hospital. .

The following dignitaries are expected to participate in the car wash: Nancy Argenziano; Josh Wooten; David Hickey; Janice Warren; Susan Gill; Patience Nave; Carol Snyder; Ginger Bryant; Pat Deutschman; Joyce Rogers; Barbara Gurrola; Mark Yerman; Rick Howard; County Administrator Richard Wesch; Ken Saunders, assistant County Administrator; Charles Poliseno, director of Public Safety, Citrus County; Anne Westbrook, director of Support Services, Citrus County; Patrick Thomas, a representative for U.S. Rep. Karen Thurman; Crystal River City Manager Philip Lilly; Inverness City Manager Frank Di Giovanni; Inverness Councilmember Jacqui Hepfer; Dick Kaufman; Bob Plaisted; Pati Smith, director of Parks and Recreation, City of Inverness; Scott Roush, Inverness Police Department; Todd Holloway, Inverness Police Department; Dwight Bruining, chief of Operations, Citrus Memorial Hospital; Emery Hensley, chief finance officer, Citrus Memorial Hospital; Greg Hamilton, editor, Citrus Times; Karen Waters, editor, Gallop Press; Joe Cino, chairman of the Citrus County Democratic Party; plus 20 additional Rotarians. Coffee and doughnuts will be served, compliments of Publix Supermarket. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages will be available for purchase. FOOD DONATIONS: Citrus County residents are asked to place their nonperishable food donations in a plastic bag (no glass, please) and hang it on their mailbox by 10 a.m. today for pickup by their letter carrier to benefit the Citrus United Basket. Boxes are available at all county post offices for dropoff of large donations and for patrons without a mailbox.

HEALTH FAIR: The Central Citrus Rotary Club will host its third annual fair, health screenings from 6:30 to 10 a.m., health fair from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Lecanto Middle School, 3800 W Education Path, Lecanto. Registration is required and forms can be obtained by calling 563-3744. Cost: Blood Screening (complete metabolic profile) $45; optional PSA screening (men only), additional $25. Free exhibits from local health care providers including spinal check, health food and supplements, massage therapy, vision and glaucoma screen, skin cancer, stress management, and American Red Cross disaster education..

HEALTH SCREENINGS: Life Line Health Screening including screenings of/for the carotid artery, abdominal aneurysm, leg circulation, and osteoporosis, also included: free blood pressure screen and diabetic counseling today at Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, 2450 Norvell Bryant Highway, Lecanto. Minimal fee per test, registration required. Call 1-800-407-4557.

SMOKE DETECTORS: The Heart of Florida Girl Scout Troop 512 operated a concession at the Fire Safety Expo on Oct. 13 for the purpose of purchasing smoke detectors. With the profits, they purchased more than 40 smoke detectors to be installed in residences that need them. The troop, along with the Homosassa Volunteer Fire Department, will go door to door to encourage residents to test their smoke detectors. If they don't have a smoke detector, a representative of the group will install a battery-operated smoke detector. The event takes place today from approximately 9 a.m. to noon or until the supply is gone.
